Fixing My Computer...In Three Parts
Contributed by: Kim Taylor   on 9/21/2008

I wouldn't say my whole weekend was wasted, but it did take all day Saturday to get back online . Last Thursday, after spending the entire day on the internet playing Scrabble on AOL, I wanted to price paper shredders. Well, my computer froze while I was trying to sign back onto the internet. I restarted my computer several times only to realize the freezing never stopped. I figured giving it twelve hours might fix the problem. No such luck. The Geek Squad recommended giving it a few days, because AOL might be down. I couldn't do that because I sell items on Ebay and Amazon.com. Amazon.com has a two day shipping policy.

I. At any rate, I ran the AOL Computer Checkup function that came with AOL 9.1. At the time I had no firewall, or spyware running. My Virus scan from RadialPoint Security Services detected three Trojans connected to my Norton Antivirus Corporate Addition and did not remove them because I had no system in place to quarantine them. The results from the AOL Checkup scan recommended I defragment my hard drive, which I did, using the PC Optimization tool. It got an error messageand stopped running twice. I ran the Defragmentation program that came with my HP Pavilion Friday morning. It does not defragment all of the hard drive. It didn't get me back online either,so I rebuilt the AOL adapter, cleared my cache files, cleared the ACS files, and turned off Windows Messenger. This still didn't get me back online, so I used the help and support feature that came with the computer. I don't for the life of me remember the exact ticket number I used to put me in touch with the OneCare Registry Cleaner, which I downloaded for free.

It took seven hours to scan and clean my hard drive of 20 viruses and 8 issues. This would never have happened if I had removed these issues three years ago. With the press of a button, all these problems were removed, but it still didn't get me back on the internet. I did learn to use the Firewall function from RadialPoint Security Services.

II. Saturday morning, I contacted AOL Live Chat and told them of the problem using Internet Explorer. The nice lady sent me instructions on how to fix this . I had to restore my IE browser settings to their default settings, this included clearing my cache, cookie, history, and internet footprints.

III. I had to restore AOL 9.1 using Computer Checkup. This would reinstall it a lot faster than downloading the program on the internet and intalling it again. I ended up doing it the hard way because I couldn't find the restore buttion on that progam. I found it on Friday, but lost the link yesterday. I am so grateful to be back online that I don't care about having to reset my browser or home page and the like. At least I didn't have to restore the entire hard drive and loose 4 years of memorieslike I did with my previous computer, a Compaq Presario 5070. I will have to find an affordable registry cleaner that works as well as OneCare.

I have to stay off the Office Depot web site because it still locks me up. I found a paper shredder on Amazon.com. The beauty of this is that I had $15.90 in gift Certificate money and they had a $5 discount for anyone using Bill Me Later feature. The paper shredder I purchased at $29.99 only cost me $9.09 after all those perks and free shipping for anything over $25.

Some days are like that. Sometimes you just want to throw the computer out the window. I hope everything is back to normal now.
