What parent has not heard the plaintive question from the wilds of a back seat on at least one road trip? Are we there yet? Are we THERE yet?? MOM! ARE WE THERE YET????
History does not record when this juvenile cry first was heard, but I suspect it dates back in this country to the Oregon Trail at the very latest. In fact, I can faintly hear across the annal of time the voice of one little Moses II in the desert. "Da-ad! Are we there yet?!?"
My own offspring have long sprung off on their own, but I was reminded of this all too familiar question just the other night. While checking the trail on the closing night of ElectriCritters at River Bend Nature Center, a young boy perhaps seven or eight years old came toward me at a very determined pace with his hands clamped firmly over his ears. Behind him walked his mother repeating over and over, "Are we there yet?"

How many times did I say that when I was a kid and we were on our way to the grandfolks house?
