Alright Mark, you asked for information on our "vacations". Can't say that mine would be all that interesting to other folks as most trips were to visit family. In late 1948, we visited California, actually it was a family work trip, pulling cotton. Raised on a farm, all the kids worked right along with our parents, in the fields, whatever crop was being raised at the time. Before that I'd only been to Oklahoma, where we'd go to visit my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. We always enjoyed those trips, happy memories there.
I tend to be long-winded when it comes to writing so I'll try to keep this short. When I was in high school, I had gone to Louisiana and to Arkansas to visit my brother who was stationed there with the Army. A few years after I graduated high school, I joined the US Womens Army Corps. I traveled by train (yes, train!) to Ft. McLellan, Alabama, for basic training. From there by air to Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, then to my permanent assignment at Ft. Knox, KY.One of my buddies and I went to Illinois one time, to a restaurant that served fried biscuits and apple butter, I'd never had fried biscuits and they were delicious. Another time we went to Michigan, it was interesting to see the Dutch windmills. Ft.Knox is also where I met my husband, Denny. He went to Vietnam, my tour of service was over and I came back home to Texas. During the time we were in Kentucky, we also visited his parents in Pennsylvania. I remember the winding roads over the mountains, especially the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia, that was one of my most memorable road trips.
After Denny got back and we were married, our trips were mostly to see family. To Texas when we lived in Virginia, then to Pennsylvania after we moved to Texas, along with continued trips to Oklahoma to visit the folks there. When our daughter, Denissa, was about 10 years old we took her to Six Flags, oh stop this roller coaster and let me off! We took our granddaughter, Courtney, to the Arbuckle Wilderness when she was about the same age, we enjoyed it more than she did though.
I'd like to see Colorado and the Northwest, but I guess my traveling days are over. I've been to 26 of the lower 48 states. So I guess that is enough for me. Texas is home and it's always good to get back here.
