For the last few months, I've been fighting to keep my computer running. It ether boots up real slow or gets snagged and stops when I sign on line. Rather than ripping it out of the wall and tossing it out of my bedroom window, I decided to do some tinkering with my virtual memory tool on my registry cleaner.
Before I started the Graham Rudman approach to making software cuts on my computer or quick restoring it to its orignal format as my brother sugestedlast Christmas, I had 66 programs running in my Start Up Manager. That is
way
too many to run a computer safely. No wonder it was slow and staggering.
The first thing I did was
s
hut down all the programs that were non-essential to starting up my computer.
I shut down things I never use, like Google Desktop, Veoh TV, and eAccelaration software. Unfortunately, I only shut down three of the 66 programs that still ran on my computer. I needed to do more. While these programs weren't running, they remained on my hard drive using up RAM.
The more memory one has to run a program, the better it works.
I started
getting rid of the numerous desktop icons I never used or didn't need,
like the ones that came with the software updates I got. iTunes didn't run all that well after Christmas. The error message said the driver was missing. Two of the songs on drive E, my CD/DVD burner drive, were protected and wouldn't upload or run on my mp3 player. Two of the new software prorams were never downloaded so I went to the Add/Remove section of the Control Panel and removed those programs along with the ones listed above. Most of the original icons that came with my computer remained
Sadly, this only added a little bit of memory to my hard drive. It wasn't enough for a faster boot up. It took me almost three hours before I saw the sign on screen from AOL and it was still stagnant and sluggish.
I got angry and went to the Virtual Memory tool on my registry cleaner
and
shut down all of the non essential programs there
. I don't use Yahoo or MSN Messenger services, I have four media players that were shut off: Media Player, Real Player, Quick Time Player, and InterActual Player. I shut down my WebCam and I turned off WeatherBug. I will probably shut down Power Panel 98 because my Cyber Power battery has been dead for three years.
I'm able to get on line faster, so I am grateful. If all the work I've done is ineffective, then I will keep tinkering. This is a small victory for me because I am not a computer whiz.
