Organize.....RIGHT NOW!
Contributed by: Mary Cluley on 12/29/2008

This WEEK, New Year's Week, instead of walking by that big box of old photos in your cabinet, I challenge you to do something about it! Are you saying to yourself, "I will save this project for 'a rainy day.' I will save this project for a time when 'I am bored with nothing to do.' " These days don't ever happen!

Why begin now?

There are 3 days coming up that many people have off work: New Year's Day and Sat. and Sunday. It's also winter....a good time to begin as when the weather gets warmer we tend to be outside more.

How do I begin?

Take out your boxes of photos and your old magnetic sticky albums. Open the magnetic albums. Be prepared for most of the photos to have turned brown, due to the unsafe glue on the page. The photos may have changed colors, due to the plastic covers causing moisture to damage the color of the photo. Do not be surprised when the photos fall out when you turn the page. Or, they may be "stuck" to the page. I use the Creative Memories Multi Purpose Tool to loosen those photos.

Throw away the bad pictures. If the photo is fuzzy, too bright, or you're making a goofy face, you can toss it. DUPLICATES? - why do you need 5 sets of prints from the church pot luck? Keep one and throw out the rest.

The easiest way to begin sorting is by date...look at the clothing....is it from the 70's? Clues can be found within the pictures themselves. Separate your snapshots into piles according to the time period and the occasion. Then, label each photo on the back with a photo labeling pencil - a sharp pencil or pen will damage the picture.

I wholeheartedly recommend sorting the photos into the Creative Memories Power Sort Box. I have three....one for each of my children. Each box organizes up to 2400 photos, with room on the lid for large 11 x 14 and 8 x 10 photos. These boxes are in one cabinet in my home. In case of a fire, I will go to my cabinet, grab my 3 boxes and head out the door.

Over time, I am telling the story of my children's lives in their "life story" albums. It is their "history," including their childhood photos, my journalling the story of their lives, written down in my own handwriting, with lots of love.

The accompanying photos are of my Power Sort Boxes. You can do it! This week! For more information, contact me at www.mycmsite.com/marycluley or lovefamilymemories@yahoo.com
