When I meet people and we are engaged in a conversation, midway through it, they say, "I love your accent, where are you from?" Astonished by their query, I respond and say, "The East Coast." Usually I equate those with an accent as being from a foreign country, but to my amazement there are plenty Americans who mistake the proper enunciation of the English language with that of a foreign tongue. A shame really, because individuals from foreign countries, who've studied the English dialect and work hard to pronounce or speak it well; and most speak it better than most of us.
Not too far in the past, one man even considered the inclusion of the so called "Ebonics" into the U. S. educational curriculum, basically trying to gain support for slurred and misspelled versions of the real thing, thanks be to God it never saw the light of day.
Enough is enough America, let's live up to our creed and be what God has called us to be, a nation of people above reproach! Stop looking for excuses not to succeed; and look for ways not to fail! Learn the proper enunciation of English verbiage, so that we don't mistake proper pronunciation with one having an accent, thus an "Accent that Never Was."
