Missing Mutt or Dumped Dog
Contributed by: Cheryl Smith on 6/20/2007

I will never understand why people abandon or dump their pets. It is a situation I just could not imagine--even if I couldn't keep a pet, I'd find a friend or relative who could. If that wasn't a possibility, I'd take it to the Humane Society. At least then it would have a chance. I'm probably preaching to the choir on this one, as many yourhubbers write about pets and animals.

My annoyance comes from the fact that my sister and brother-in-law have found a dog. They live just outside the city limits in a somewhat rural area. This leads me to believe the dog was dumped. Their neighbors confirmed that this was a 'popular' dumping ground, as the dogs they have were all found in this area. If you've read my blogs, you probably know that sis and bro-in-law have adopted two dogs in the past year. They have three dogs and one visiting dog. They have no room to keep the mystery mutt. He is young, medium sized, and not neutered. According to them, he is a nice dog--seems to have a happy temperment. He was found around Turkey Ranch Rd and Clyde Morgan Rd lastThursday. If you recognize this dog as lost, they ask that you contact them. In the event that he is not claimed, they are looking for a good home for him. They can be reached at 940-224-2362. Ask for Ernie.

Makes you wonder ... if a person could dump an animal that can't fend for itself in an unfriendly atmosphere what must their human relationships be like?

I don't get too emotional about other strays. I deal with only those which show up upon my doorstep. I find not reason to be sad over animal life at all really. It just is, it just takes its own twists and turns. Do what you can with the life which you are directly confronted with.

Evolution seeks a balance in nature. So-called domestic cats are the most efficient hunters on the planet. Ever had rats or mice running around your property? You WANT a string of stray cats which will hunt them with a relentless, natural inclination.

My compassionate neighbor and I found homes for most of these defenseless 'strays.' I'm happy about that. As far as I know, a stray makes the best BARN CAT on the planet, they are hunters.

I was not willing to discount her because she did not line up with what should be 'proper'. I allowed her to be a stray, to be, and gave her and her offspring a helping hand. I could not tolerate the idea she or her young be shuttled off to a holding pen and later killed. Hell with that!

In my view, even a stray is wanted given the right environment. the old, very pregnant, very fat starving stray surely found a home. I loved that old old feline reject. I took care of her and all her young for many years.

It is a sad fact that many animals end up unwanted, unloved, and dumped. We get lots of them in the country. I remember one tiny dog that waited at the gate for its owners to return. They never did of course. I'd like to dump the people out in strange country, no food, no water, ticks and fleas and coyotes waiting to dine on them.

After working away from home, I came home right after 9-11-2001. Guess what? She had two kittens, one with stars all over its body, and the other with stripes. I named them Stars & Stripes. Both were females uhh...produced more problems. My neighbor lady and I both had a heart for these critters, and eventually we found homes for all of these offspring.

Cheryl, I'm with you here. With adult dogs it's hard to know if they were dumped or just went off following their noses and hunting, got distracted and eventually got lost. One time a VERY PREGNANT cat showed up on my back porch, half staved. I fed the danged thing, kept feeding it, watching it have 6 kittens. I did not have the heart to take it to the Humane Society for fear it would be eventually given a lethal injection, so I kept feeding the wanderer, and then it's offspring.
