The Wichita Falls Area Food Bank expands the
PowerPak 4 Kids Backpack Program
The PowerPak 4 Kids Backpack Program is a program where chronically hungry children receive a backpack filled with nutritious food to carry home each weekend during school months. Many times the meals children receive are meals provided by schools leaving them without meals over the weekend because the parents just simply can't afford daily meals. As study has shown, when children miss out on nutritious food, their entire body is affected. However, with the weekend PowerPaks, it's helping the children, as well as the parents.
Initial start-up funds for the PowerPak 4 Kids were provided by the Wichita Falls Area Community Foundation -- Berneice R. Leath Donor Advised Fund. With this years PowerPak 4 Kids expansion others foundations such as Bank of America, Guinn Foundation, Snell Charitable Foundation, Gene Connelly Foundation and America's Second Harvest partnering with Wal-Mart as well as donations from individuals, organizations/service clubs are joining forces with WFACF -- Berneice R. Leath Donor Advised Fund to reach more children then ever before. At this time other grant applications are being submitted to secure funding for this year's PowerPak 4 Kids expansion.
The PowerPak 4 Kids program has grown beyond expectations, in the "2006-07" school year we were sending 486 children home with food for the weekend, in the "2007-08" school year we will sky rocket to an astounding 1,187 children. The goal of the Food Bank is to end hungry in our 13 North Texas county service area; this is just another step to reach that goal.
No child should ever go hungry!
