July CASA Volunteer of the Month
CASA Travels to Washington, D.C. to advocate for children
Wichita Falls, TX July 17, 2008 -- Betty traveled thousands of miles, paying her own way, to represent Child Advocates CASA program in Washington, D.C. On June 10, 2008, Betty joined forces with CASA volunteers, staff and board members from across the state of Texas to visit Senator Hutchison and Senator Cornyn at the capitol.
In Washington Betty helped advocate for restoring VOCA funds to CASA and other victims' assistance groups. The group also asked the senators to help improve the child protection system in other ways, such as increasing federal support for aging out foster youth, and federal funding for kinship care resources. Texas CASA officials said that Betty was a shinning example of the passion our CASA volunteers have for children and with her passion she was able to do a wonderful job of sharing the CASA story.
Betty, named volunteer of the month in July, has been a volunteer with Child Advocates since June 2006. In that time she has served as the CASA on two cases involving four children. Betty is someone who is always there when you need her. From giving hugs to calling prospective CASA volunteers to folding newsletters- Betty is willing to help!
Child Advocates is a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower volunteers to be the voice in court for abused and neglected children. CASA volunteers are appointed by the court to be the Guardian ad Litem for children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect.
