A WAR STORY OF IRAQ
Contributed by: MELISSA dockins on 2/6/2008

To know a soldier is to know their victories and misfortunes! This story is about a young man who joined the service after graduating and since has served three tours in our war in Iraq. With his first tour he was brought home to his mother shattered from the waste down. With his humvee being his worst and best comrade, that in itself in one swoop had him hanging on for his dear life! This would be the worst encounter with death that would bring all of us to our knees, realizing that the war on terror had hit too close to home! With his second tour well after recovery there he headed again this time a married man with a child in the womb of his wife, he left all he knew yet again, to defend this country he loves so dearly! This tour would be a success, coming home intact to fulfill the biggest duty of his life, to be a daddy to his little boy who had been born while in Iraq! Before we knew it, it was time to bid him farewell yet again! This time he would not be led but he would be the leader! Worried and dreading the outcome of commitment his soldiers underneath him would have filled his head with uncertainty! A couple of days after arriving directly in Iraq at a unknown location I received my first phone call from war! The first question I asked was, "how are your soldiers?" Many of them this being their first tour into the torn Iraq, he said," well, after hearing and seeing their first mortar I believe I am safe with my men!" This soldier had not even been at his permanent post not even two day! Boy we knew we were in for a long 15 month tour! Then, the phone call came just two short months after our beloved soldier departed. I remember the day as if were yesterday, walking in to my parents home seeing my dad standing in front of the fire with tears rolling down his face, at that time still not knowing the story in full detail, I stood there as calmly as I could awaiting to hear detail after detail. Coincidently, it was my sister-in-law's birthday that day! What a birthday present to get, knowing her husband was thrown from his humvee yet again and this time was attacked by a unsuspected IED. My brother and the other soldierwas sitting in that shattered back seat, talk about yourbottom being hot!You know by the grace of my brothers guardian angel and for the purpose that is on his life he and a fellow soldier were shielded from that blast. Seeing the pictures today of what that might of felt like or to imagine what loud boom that IED made is unimaginable for me! These pictures are only a small portion of what happens in Iraq and it is amazing what visuals our soldiers come back home with! No wonder they are soldiers, no normal person would know how to handle the magnitude of the after effects war as on you! So, say a little prayer and wish them well. It doesn't hurt to salute the brave in uniform and humble yourselves, what little we need to do to boost the moral of our bravest, our men and women in war!!

Thank you for sharing your story, Melissa. My prayers go out to the men and women who face things we cannot even imagine each day they are in Irag and Afghanistan. May God hold them close and protect them.

Amen, Melissa. I continually thank God for our brave men and women in the military who procured, and continue to protect the freedoms that we all enjoy today.
