Susan has been named the June Volunteer of the Month by Child Advocates, the CASA program for Archer, Clay, Montague and Wichita counties.
Growing up with 8 sisters and 2 brothers qualifies Susan as someone who knows what kids are like. Her childhood spent in Washington State, Susan moved to Wichita Falls with her husband 17 years ago and has raised her own family here. Already a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and Child Evangelism Fellowship, it was when her granddaughters entered school that Susan began looking to serve the community in other ways as well. Child Advocates was a great fit for a woman with a love for children.
A Special Education major, Susan enjoys spending one-on-one time with the child in her current case. "I have a baby on my case right now, and it's a fairly simple case," she says. "It's rewarding though knowing that I am lightening the load for my case supervisor." Susan is looking forward to her next case and knows that although this one may be uncomplicated that her work for that child is no less important. "It's very rewarding work."
Child Advocates is a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower volunteers to be the voice in court for abused and neglected children. CASA volunteers are appointed by the court to be the Guardian ad Litem for children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect.
