Things I wish I knew more about.

In the last two weeks, I have had two problems that required maintainence to be at my apartment. The first time, my bathroom faucet dripped and it was difficult to get the right knob tighter. The receptionist on the phoneasked," Can't you tighten the pipe under the sink yourself?"

IfI knew more about plumbing, there wouldn't be any need for an apartment maintainence man. The only things I know are: If it drips, something needs tightening, if it leaks, something needs replacing, if it's clogged, a plunger needs to be used.

If I get down on that hard floor in my bathroom, even with a kneeling pad, I ain't getting up without help. Having a disability can be a curse sometimes. If they are going to ask me to do repairs myself, why don't they pay me the maintainence man's salary? Mom said I should've complained. I tried last week but she was either on the phone with the door closed or out of the office.

When maintainence did show up, they had to do more than tighten the valve under my bathroom sink. They had to turn my water heater off and replace the washer on the cold water knob on the faucet,. Later I found out that the receptionist asks questions like they do to problem solve before having to call maintainence. In some cases, all it takes is tightening a valve to stop a dripping faucet.

Yesterday, I had a repeat of my trouble in the article "Early Morning Mishap". The only difference being the time of day. Thankfully, I didn't have to send the maintainence man upstairs to bang on the door and wake her at 1:30 a.m. in order to fix the leak in her tub. The leak was small enough that it didn't require any water be removed with the steamer. I used a sponge. The maintainence man used a paper towel.

I did have to go through "third degree" so the receptionist could determine whether to contact maintainence. It was worth it because the severity ofthe leak sent him over here within the hour. There wasn't any way for me to climb the stairs to fix the leak in my neighbors tub upstairs. I told maintainence this did happen before and it was more severe.

What bothers me is, the person that owns the complex I live in doesn't want to pay its workers. The result being a huge turnover between now and the time school starts and a hike in rent when my lease is up in February. I wish I knew what their justification was for not paying their staff.
