Describe yourself in song
Contributed by: Jim Miller   on 6/22/2007

Okay, class, listen up. Mark! Stop shooting paper wads at Pamela! DON'T make me take my ruler out of my desk, old man! Now then...

Your homework assignment for the weekend is designed to let all of us get to know one another a little bit better. Put your hand DOWN, Mark, I have the floor right now. Thank you, sir. Now, as I was saying... designed to let us get to know one another better. Each of you are to write a description of yourself to be posted here for your fellow coots and cooties to read. It can be any length you want. Just make it honest and true to yourself. That's it. No other requirements nor rules.

Well, there is one more little technical condition. Each and every line that you write must be a legitimate song lyric from a published or recorded song. That's right, boys and girls, describe yourself in song. Mix and match lyrics as you wish from as few or as many songs as you like. Play with it, have fun with it, just tell us about you in song.

Yes, Mark, go ahead and try to "Stump the Chump" if you want. But if anyone challenges any line(s) in your description, the burden of proof that the challenged line is from a published song is on the writer. I'll give you my own example to help you get started, then you're on your own. HAVE FUN!

Sunshine on my shoulder

Sunshine on my shoulder makes me happy. Praise for the singing, praise for the morning, praise for them springing, fresh from the world. Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning, born of the one light Eden saw play.

When I was younger, so much younger than today, I never needed anybody's help
in any way. You know, I've seen a lot of what the world can do, and it's breaking my heart in two. It's hard to get by just upon a smile, girl. Now I find I've changed my mind, I've opened up the doors.

Come waltz with me, dance to life's sweetest sound. I'll lead you first till you twist me around! Slip slidin' away, slip slidin' away, you know the nearer your destination, the more you're slip slidin' away! Just kickin' down the cobblestones, lookin' for fun and feelin' groovy. I'm on your side, oh, when times get rough, and friends just can't be found.

But I can see clearly now the clouds are gone. Lighten up while you still can. Don't even try to understand, just find a place to make your stand, and take it easy.

Here comes the sun (little Annie)...here comes the sun... And I say, "It's all right." Somewhere in her smile she knows that I don't need no other lover. You are the sunshine of my life.

Now his life is full of wonder but his heart still knows some fear of a simple thing he cannot comprehend. Why they try to tear the mountains down to bring in a couple more; more people, more scars upon the land.

It seems to me a subterfuge.

Jim, why not be real? Why hide behind such things as esoteric song lyrics? What exactly does that tell anyone about you?

Jim: I am catching up reading the posts. You are much more original than I am. My mind isn't nimble enough for this workout! But I enjoyed reading your post.

Jim, are you part of the blog police? Really? Now, if song 'titles' can be part of this exercise, then I'd probably make a go at it. I would not want to upset the apple cart, but are song titles allowed in this biographical form of writing?

I would guess, if folks are actually curious of us Coots and Cootettes, perhaps folks could actually say something about themselves and their lives. Though the song thing might be fun, it seems more esoteric than revealing.

Pamela, Tell ya what. The only reason I have responded to any of your blogs, or stories is located in the fact that you started making responses to mine. Our first conversation about music convinced me that I should refrain. I'll now go back to that initial impression. Alrighty? No hard feelings, just the way it is.

The blog police? Golly gee. Didn't realize there was such a thing. Do we fund it with our tax dollars?

Pamela, I am just completely mystified here about your comment. I had no idea we were in a race, nor even drive on the same street. Perhaps I have missed something. Maybe I have missed a line of conversation.

Oh yeah, and I never shot a paper wads (nor spit balls) at anyone. My memory may be lagging however. I did put 5 tacks on the seat of our 5th grade geography teacher once though. He wore a three-and-half foot, hole filled paddle out on me for that one.
