Just Call Me "Trailer Trash"
Contributed by: Carole Steinberg on 3/23/2007

I have always loved to travel. I grew up in Pennsylvania and each summer my Mom and Dad and Sister and I would load up our pop-up camper and hit the road. We spent many carefree summers camping up and down the east coast. Those miles in a 1968 Dodge Coronet with that little trailer behind us planted a gypsy seed in me.

Now I'm a "grownup" I still love to drag a little trailer behind me, but these days it's a 1967 Shasta Compact called "Lil' Buck",a 10ft travel trailer painted with murals of cowgirls and horses. If I need a little more room to bring my family, I pull a 22ft 1962 Airstream Safari. I love these old trailers. Over the past couple of years, I have rescued and restored several vintage trailers.

People ask where I find them. My teen boys will tell you I have trailer radar. A nice drive through the country will have me scanning the horizon for abandoned trailers, some are in fields or behind barns, I found one behind a dog groomer, my dog Moses has found two for me by insisting I not follow the same path on my daily walk.

When we moved to Wichita Falls from Las Vegas my main concern was to find a house that would have RV parking. My husband and I towed 2 trailers with us, but that doesn't stop me from looking for just one more. When my collection of "trailer trash" gets out of hand, I sell off a couple on ebay or craigslist, but as soon as there is room for another, my "radar" goes up and my eyes start roaming. I've dragged them home from as far away as Arkansas.

When I first became interested in the vintage (a nice word for "old") trailers, everyone thought I was crazy. But while cruising the internet looking for parts, I came across a group of women just as crazy as me. I found Sisters on the Fly ( www.sistersonthefly.com), a group of close to 900 women who restore, paint murals on and decorate these little time capsules. Women like me from Alaska to Florida meet up for Cowgirl adventures and campouts, some traveling thousands of miles with trailer in tow. For the past two years, every other month or so I hitch up and head out on an adventure. Some of our trips include visits to historic sites, museums, national and state parks. The group motto is "We have more fun than anyone." Which we do while fly fishing, horseback riding, shopping, or just sitting around the campfire sharing trailer tales or swapping recipes and life lessons.

I have a decal on the back window of my truck that says "Trailer Trash". It's a major source of embarrassment for my sons, but in my gypsy heart I know that decal really means "Trailer Treasure". Happy Trails!

This is a kool story. I never thought of my 40ft Kountry Air as vintage, I consider it old and worn out. I'm going to convince my husband to restore it and get it back on the road! Thanks for the idea!
