One Theory Is As Good As Another - They Are All Theory
Strangely enough I never have had much respect for Freud or Jung. Being and addict and alcoholic, I despised the methods in which both men went about defining addiction, alcoholism and sexual immorality. Being a reasonably smart man coupled with a phd in life, I find many theories humorous or just plain insane. Let's take Darwin and the Theory of evolution; actually let's not but let me prove a quick point. He actually did not write it someone else did. And if I am right he peered reviewed and found it interesting and probable but not factual. Well, the rest of the world bought it. And so was the theories of Freud and Jung. And since we are on the idea of theories, drug addiction and alcoholism I want to throw another in the mix PTSD. I sincerely believe that my own research will show that PTSD is preventable and curable just as addiction and alcoholism are but it takes extreme willingness on the patient's part and many are simply not willing due to the access of modern chemistry which Freud was an avid partaker.
We can find a measurable amount of different between WWI, WWI Vietnam and Iraq simply by confusing the facts with any number of other mental problems; ie cowardliness, shell shock, battle fatigue and now PTSD. But if we are to leave these as separate but equal illnesses then we find a significant difference in percentages. These gaps in percentage I sincerely believe are based on very simple reasons that experts do not want to admit too. They are based solely on writing! Yes, it is the hand written letter and the practice of writing loved ones that makes all the difference in illness. We see
as the progression of PTSD is tied directly to the reduction of hand written letters. We see in WWI and WWII that the only means of communication was a hand written letter. In Vietnam we began to see the advancement of telephone and telegraph wires. And last in IRAQ we have the Internet and Text Messaging none of which access the part of the brain related to PTSD, writing and the release of endorphins needed to handle extreme deres.
The fundamental theory I have with addiction, alcoholism and PTSD is that writing frees the brain of digressed feelings. It puts a person in touch with their real selves and decrease depression and manic episodes substantially. In this decrease a person loses self-pity and gains true hope in a future without PTSD or addiction to prescription medication - with one being a fearful as the other to many. If the educated communities would put aside their egos and pride for just a moment and look to us who have recovered from a seemingly hopeless state they too would see that writing, journaling and list are the real key to recovery and not the theories of Freud, Jung and others who believe in Quality of Life Through Modern Chemistry. I sincerely am not trying to make on one agency or department look bad but this idea that everything can be fixed with the right prescription must be taken of the shelf and real mental training done for recovery.
Last, being the executive director of a recovery support center, having written my own programs, I get the chance to watch as this theory works everyday. Notice I said that it works everyday but not always with every person. A person must be willing to write their way through their episodes for writing to be beneficial at all. Without this willingness then this theory is useless to some/most.
