A Grand Plan for Lake Wichita
Contributed by: Penny Miller   on 3/16/2008

I went to the joint meeting of the City Council and the Parks Board to listen to the presentation from a consultant concerning Wichita Falls parks. I was immensely pleased to hear the recommendation to develop Lake Wichita as a nature park.

When I came to Wichita Falls, I thought this was a relatively barren wasteland for birds. It didn't help that I got here in the summer. I have since found that there is some very good birding here, especially in the spring and fall migration periods. We are on the border of different ecosystems, and birds from all over the US come through here. Some stop to rest and move on; others stay the winter. There are also a fair amount of other interesting wildlife near at hand.

Wildlife watching is a growing hobby in the US. Many people don't have the opportunities that we take for granted to see wildlife up close. People travel to Texas to see birds and although we won't ever rival the Rio Grande Valley in the diversity of wildlife, especially birds, we do have some interesting wildlfe here and with some development and advertising, this could be a more frequent stopfor nature watchers.
