This morning as I left for work, I was approaching Seymour Highway when I saw a blue jay in the road. It appeared to be dead, so I drove past. Then my conscience got the better of me--I had to be sure. I turned around, went back, and checked. He wasn't dead, but he couldn't stand or move. I bundled him up and decided to make a run by Wild Bird Rescue on my way to work.
When I arrived at Wild Bird Rescue, the drop off carriers were scattered on the front porch, the carriers on the back ramp were scattered all over the back area, some roof tiles were missing, the martin house was askew, and the aviary we had just finished the day before had wind damage. We hadn't even had a chance to use it yet! Yes, it could have been worse, but it was discouraging, when money is tight, as it is when there are so many mouths to feed.
I checked in the bird, did an exam and had the jay set up when Bob, the Executive Director, arrived. He should have had a busy day. I didn't hear from Bob all day, which is unusual, so that probably means he took in a lot of birds. The last major storm like this one, I was working and we took in 80 birds in the one day. It was a mad house. I hope he didn't get in that many, as we had a pretty full house already, but I am sure he had his work cut out for him today. Thanks, Bob!

Final count for yesterday was 118 birds. They were still coming in today, although not quite at the pace of Wednesday. The primary birds taken in were Western Kingbirds, Scissortailed flycatchers and doves, although there were plenty of others too.
