Early Morning Encounter
Contributed by: Penny Miller   on 6/3/2007

Yesterday two other Master Naturalists and I met to conduct a Breeding Bird Survey in the Beaver Creek area (around Electra). It is hard to convince people to get up to meet at 5:30 AM, but there are a few of us morning people out there still.

As we were driving toward the survey starting point, I was telling the new participant, Pat, that we often saw wild pigs at the first few survey points, when out of the tall grass at the side of the round came a wild pig, running full speed into the road in front of my truck. Needless to say, we hit it. The pig kept going. Fortunately, the only casualty was my front bumper and we were able to continue the morning's expedition.

We saw many birds--the best of which was a pair of long-billed curlews, which is an unusual siting for this time of year.
